Dot EU was conspicuous by its absence from the Cape Town Icann meeting agenda. When will Icann green-light the European extension?
When Domaines.Info spoke to Eurid just before the Icann meeting held in Cape Town (South Africa) from December 1-5, expectations were high that there would be discussions about putting Dot EU in the Internet root.
This is of course vital for any new extension. Icann, through the "Iana function" it controls, has the power to turn an Internet extension on or off. So in order for Dot EU to become functional, it needs to be activated by Icann.
Eurid not in South Africa
Dot EU registry Eurid had thus planned to make the trip to Cape Town in order to finalize negotiations with Icann about putting Dot EU in the root. But as Eurid representative Fay Howard explained to Domaines.info by phone this morning, the trip was cancelled. "There was no reason for us to go," she said. "There were no Dot EU discussions on the meeting agenda."
Icann has already received an official written request to include Dot EU in the Internet root from both the European Commission and Eurid. An answer is still expected soon, with Eurid pointing to an "early 2005" completion of the negotiations with Icann on its website. However, there is hope at Eurid that Dot EU can be activated by Icann sooner, rather than later. Perhaps in the next few weeks, after the Icann staff has returned to business as usual at the Internet regulator's California offices, following the Cape Town meeting.
It's important for Eurid that Icann does hurry though, as the EU registry cannot start accrediting its registrars – a major step in opening Dot EU - until the extension is activated by Icann.
