DomainesInfo has learned that Icann's vice-president may soon resign.
Icann VP Paul Verhoef may soon step down.
According to a very reliable source, Internet overseer Icann is to loose its vice-president in the very near future. Ducthman Paul Verhoef is "on loan" to Icann from the European Commission. Last year, he became head of Icann's new Brussels office and DomainesInfo interviewed him at that time.
It seems that Verhoef has grown weary of Icann's internal processes and has begun to seek a return to the European Commission. Loosing Verhoef, a true European who speaks four languages (English, French, German and his native Ducth) is obviously not very good news for an Icann desperate to endear the international Internet community and especially the European Internet domain managers.
Icann's Brussels office was seen by many as a gesture of good will towards the European Internet community but also, to the more cynical Icann watchers, as a kind of Trojan Horse into Europe and the Commission. If Verhoef does leave (as yet, there is no official confirmation of this), it will leave Icann with a particularly difficult gap to fill.
Breaking news: it's official !
Icann has just published a press release confirming Paul Verhoef's return to the European Commission, where he will head up the "Galileo" project, Europe's own GPS system.
Icann is already looking for Verhoef's replacement and has indicated that when found, the new VP will continue to work out of the Brussels office.
