UK registry introduces sanctions for registrars considered to be involved in acts of domain tasting.
While ICANN is still discussing the subject of domain tasting – taking advantage of payment grace periods to register and cancel domain names without being charged for them – UK registry Nominet has decided to act.
A note has just been sent to official Nominet registrars such as INDOM telling them that new measures will be introduced from August 8th.
Up until now, no limit has been set on the number of names registrars can delete after registrations. The delete feature exists to allow registrars to correct errors made during the registration process. "It is clear that some tag holders (Nominet refers to its registrars as tag holders – ed) are now abusing this facility by 'domain tasting'," Nominet says. "This practice is a breach of our acceptable use policies and places unnecessary load on our systems, potentially jeopardising access for other users."
Nominet claims to have become aware of domain tasting last year, when it started being seen on Dot COM. "At that time we introduced a policy principle clarifying how our deletion facility should be used (to correct mistakes) and how it should not be used (e.g. domain tasting)," explains the registry. "Since then we have monitored registration and deletion volumes closely. We now feel it is necessary to take firm action against this practice."
We will take the following action from 8 August 2006:
Any deletion of domains that we believe is not for the purpose of correcting mistakes, will be dealt with under our contract with tag holders. The sanctions may include reduced credit limits, suspension of tags or the cancellation of tags.
To help us identify potential abuse we will introduce a limit on the number of domain names that can be deleted. The limit will be 5 domain names or 5% of domain names that have yet to be invoiced (whichever is higher). Once this limit is reached all delete requests will be rejected and the domain names will be invoiced. Our analysis of the statistics for registration and deletion show that this new limit will not effect any tag holders who delete domain names registered in error.
