French registry AFNIC's board elections took place last week in Paris. Half the board seats were up for renewal, with elected members to serve three year terms.
Although an independent entity, the French registry remains under the control of the French government. For historical reasons, half of its ten-man board is made up of government representatives. Furthermore, the board's president has double voting rights and must be chosen from one of these five board members. A "government spokesperson" also serves as the board's "eleventh member", with power to veto any board decision.
The other five board members are elected from each of AFNIC's three constituencies: registrars, users and the international community. The first two constituencies are each given two representatives on the board, while the international community, mainly established to honour France's long-standing relationships with its ex-colonies, gets just one. Each constituency representative is elected for a three-year term and cannot serve more than two terms.
The current term ended last Friday. Elections were held in Paris, at AFNIC's annual general meeting, to nominate the new board members. For the registrar constituency, INDOM General Manager Stéphane Van Gelder, running for a second term, was re-elected by a majority vote and NETNAMES Country Manager Peter Cousyn, running for a first term, was elected to the second seat.
