We asked DotBERLIN GmbH, the company behind the .BERLIN initiative, what the situation really was. "The Berlin Senate (i.e. government) is currently not in favor of a .BERLIN," explained DotBERLIN's Johannes Lenz-Hawliczek. "The city wants to protect their portal, operated as a public-private-partnership with a publishing house and two banks, from competition that might arise from new portals under a future .BERLIN."
Opposition from the city's government could spell trouble for the CityTLD project, but luckily for DotBERLIN GmbH it seems not all of Berlin's institutions are working on the same page. "The Berlin parliament is currently discussing a resolution submitted by the opposition CDU asking the Senate to support .BERLIN," Lenz-Hawliczek added.
Parliamentary support would serve to strengthen .BERLIN's position and may help convince ICANN to OK the new domain for a planned launch next year.
