Germany's Internet extension reaches new heights by crossing the 11 million registered domain mark.
The records keep tumbling for Germany's Internet domain, Dot DE. Already the most popular "country code" suffix by far, .DE rocked the domain name world last year by breaching the 10 million name level, a first for any extension bar .COM.
This seemingly did nothing to quench the German's unending thirst for domain names and .DE's growth has continued unabated since then. "The number of domains has been increasing at a constant rate of approximately one million per year for several years now, thus proving that .DE domains are still first choice for German Internet users," says German registry DENIC, who manages .DE.
A precious domain
With so many .DE names registered every year, DENIC has had to start getting creative with their milestone celebrations. So this year, instead of rejoicing over the 11th million name like any other suffix manager could only dream of doing, they patiently waited another few days… for a nice round number to be reached.
"In the early afternoon of July 12, 2007, we processed the registration request for pressious.de, the 11,111,111 .DE domain," DENIC said. "The domain holder is the owner of a printing shop in Westphalia."
