The preliminary report of the latest ICANN board meeting is out. Read on for highlights.
ICANN's board in session during the 2007 Lisbon (Portugal) meeting
The board meeting was held on September 11, 2007 via teleconference. Board decisions include:
Appointment of new Nominating Committee chairman. ICANN's NomCom helps find the best suited candidates for top jobs within the organisation. Hagen Hultzch, an ex ICANN board member, will be "recycled" as the new chairman of the NomCom, to serve until the end of next year.
Venue chosen for ICANN's February 2008 meeting. Four candidates were vying for the Asia Pacific region meeting. A high number, probably due to the close proximity of the meeting date and the full launch of the new .ASIA Internet extension, targeted at the AP region and scheduled for March 2008. Dubai, Delhi, Sydney and Hong-Kong were the four hopefuls. Delhi was chosen. In an effort to soften the blow for the others, the board resolved to arrange a major regional meeting in Dubai in 2008 and suggested that all unsuccessful candidates would have special consideration for the next AP region meeting in 2009.
North Korea's suffix delegated. Currently unused, North Korea's .KP might soon be activated. As a first step towards putting the country's suffix online, ICANN received a request from the Korea Computer Center, North Korea's main computer research center, to delegate .KP. Once done, Korea Computer Center will be able to manage .KP and put it in use. ICANN's board voted unanimously to accept the .KP delegation request.
Putting the ex Yugoslav republics back online .ME (Montenegro), .RS (Serbia) and .YU (Yugoslavia) are all intertwined. Before the war, .YU was the country's main Internet extension. It is still used today by Serbians and Montenegrins, who now have their own extensions (the board voted to delegate .ME to the Government of Montenegro and .RS to the Serbian National Registry of Internet Domain Names). Keeping all three suffixes active would therefore be a problem, especially as ISO has now dropped the YU code as the country no longer officially exists. The board has therefore decided to entrust the Serbian National Registry with .YU under the proviso that it work to decommission the extension and transition .YU names to equivalent .RS and .ME domains no later than September 30, 2009.
