Nominet looking for more dispute resolution experts

UK registry Nominet's Dispute Resolution Service provides alternative dispute resolution for .UK domain names. New experts are being sought to help maintain the quality of this service.

As the .UK registry, Nominet operates its own Dispute Resolution Service (DRS).

This is a rare move with registries generally preferring to outsource dispute resolution to such organisations as WIPO, the most prolific UDRP (.COM's dispute resolution service) provider.

DRS functions in a not dissimilar way to UDRP (the acronym stands for Uniform domain name Dispute Resolution Policy), with experts appointed to decide cases according to the Dispute Resolution Service Policy (DRSP). DRS currently has 37 experts.

DRS cases are quite numerous. Nominet says it handles around 80 new cases every month, with 25% yielding decisions by an expert. By comparison, the French dispute resolution service only handled 20 cases for the whole of 2006.

This volume of cases has convinced Nominet that more experts are needed to maintain quality of service and efficiency. Ten new experts are being sought and candidates "can be from any background in the Internet, mediation or arbitration industries".

A fixed fee of £750 per case is paid to experts handling DRS cases.
