Spain has just opened up its namespace to IDNs. In the first 24 hours, 2,000 registration requests were received for .ES IDNs.
The Spanish IDN Sunrise started on October 2nd. Local registry NIC ES, contacted by Domaines.info, gave the first registration stats for the country's initial IDN launch period.
"We had 2,000 requests in the first 24 hours," NIC ES's José Alvarez told us. "About 75% of those requests include the two characters ñ and ç."
The remaining 25% include the following accented vowels: á, à, é, è, í, ï, ó, ò, ú, ü. Most popular within this group is the accented O character "ó", heavily used in key words like fondación, associación, organización.
The first two IDN domains registered are both common Spanish first names: Jesús and Inakí.
The .ES IDN Sunrise lasts until October 30, 2007. During this time, all existing .ES domain name owners have priority on the equivalent IDN domain.
The IDN launch covers the following 13 characters: ñ á à é è í ï ó ò ú ü ç ll.
