Nominet CEO speaks out in favour of Asia's new extension, launching today.
Nominet CEO Lesley Cowley is advising businesses linked with Asia to consider registering .ASIA domain names
In a story run yesterday by ZDnet.co.uk, Nominet CEO Lesley Cowley is quoted as saying that "businesses in Asia or who do business with Asian companies may consider registration…" in .ASIA.
Such a vote of confidence coming from a country code extension manager may seem surprising, but Nominet is not alone in singing .ASIA's praises.
Just last week .EU registry EURid published a press release suggesting that sex.asia would be the most requested domain during .ASIA's initial sunrise period which opens today (October 9th). ".ASIA is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood," said EURid general manager Marc Van Wesemael in a statement published on October 5th. "We offer our best wishes to the .ASIA registry."
When it opened for its own sunrise in December 2005, .EU (which covers all European Union member states) was considered the first "regional" extension. The new .ASIA is based on the same theme but covers a much larger area as it is designed to include the 73 different countries listed by Internet regulator ICANN as being part of the "Asia Pacific" region.
