From October 21, Australian registry auDA is completing the release of geographic names. The names will be available on a first come, first served basis.
In 2005, auDA started a process of releasing names which were previously considered restricted under Australia's domain name rules.
The names were defined by the registry as "geographic", meaning the name of any location with an Australian postcode.
auDA chose a novel way of releasing the names. Rather than going for the now traditionnal auction-type model, which tend to net registries greater proceeds at the expense of domain name buyers, auDA opted for a ballot model. Where more than one request was received for a particular geographic name, a computer program was used to randomly draw the "winner".
For the first 5 days after release, the names will be charged at the 2005 ballot fee (4 times the registration price), plus the registrar's registration fee. After 5 days, the names will be charged at the normal registry fee, plus the registrar's registration fee.
Applicants for the names will still have to meet the standard registration requirements: .COM.AU and .NET.AU names can only be registered by Australian companies and businesses.
