No anti-phishing policy for .ASIA

Despite Internet media stories to the contrary, DotAsia currently has no plans to implement an anti-phishing policy. But the .ASIA registry is ready to discuss possible anti-phishing scenarios.

We were intrigued by recent media reports like this one, implying that a strict anti-phishing policy was about to be introduced by .ASIA registry DotAsia.

While the concept – banning domain names used for phishing attacks – is an appealing one, it raises many questions. How would offending domain names by identified? Who would decide whether names should be banned or a less extreme penalty be enforced? How would this type of policy be integrated with current dispute resolution systems such as ICANN's UDRP? What would happen to banned names, would they be deleted (and therefore become available for someone else to register) or put on hold indefinitely?

Seeing registries get more heavily involved in the fight against phishing-type scams would obviously be a welcome development. And DotAsia is ready to work on a policy against this sort of abuse. But when questioned by Domaines.Info on the soon-to-be-implemented anti-phishing policy suggested by the Internet stories, and the possible link with the Anti Phishing Working Group, DotAsia confirmed that no such policy yet exists. "While we are eager to engage in the discussion, we have neither 'agreed' nor 'disagreed' to implement the suggested policy," a DotAsia insider told us.
