DotAsia has just released the first official numbers for .ASIA, with the highest number of requests coming from the USA. The second phase of the Sunrise process is now underway.
15,334 .ASIA applications were received during the first phase of the .ASIA launch (Sunrise SR2a), which ran from October 9 to October 30, 2007.
"I am most excited to see that brand owners around the world are able to protect their names through our Sunrise process," commented DotAsia CEO Edmon Chung. "If you can think of any brand, it has probably been registered."
Of those names requested, only 622 received more than one application and will therefore be awarded via auction.
Requests came in from 79 countries, but it's surprising to see that none of the 73 countries that make up the Asia Pacific region covered by .ASIA made it to the top three. US registrants were far and away the most prolific, with 4,920 applications. England was number 2 with 1,269 requests and France third with 1,235 applications.
60 accredited registrars, including INDOM, took part in this first Sunrise open only to actively used trademarks applied for on or before Marc 16, 2004.
By comparison, when .EU's first Sunrise started on December 7, 2005, 100,000 applications had been received in the first 3 hours and more than 800 registrars took part.
So far, .ASIA seems to have a narrower focus, with major brand owners striving to protect themselves in the new suffix. "INDOM is France's leading provider of registrar services to the corporate sector and we are seeing this exact trend," concurs Patrick Hauss, Sales Director at INDOM. "DotAsia's stats show that INDOM alone makes up almost 50% of the French .ASIA market. The national and international brands and companies that we represent have quite clearly moved to protect their assets during the first .ASIA Sunrise and we are already processing requests for the next phase."
The next Sunrise period started on November 13 and lasts until January 15, 2008.
