The folks at DotAsia are working hard to make their launch a success. In the next few weeks, timetables will be updated and new features introduced.
DotAsia CEO Edmon Chung gives Domaines.info readers the latest dates and features of the .ASIA rollout
DotAsia CEO Edmon Chung remains a very busy man as .ASIA enters the final stages of its pre-launch process. Under the slogan "global recognition, regional significance", Chung and his team are being as dynamic and flexible as they can to make sure that .ASIA continues to meet the expectations of the marketplace.
"We're delighted with the way the launch has gone so far," Chung told Domaines.Info during an exclusive interview last week, in which he revealed .ASIA's latest figures and unveiled some forthcoming schedule changes. "We had more than 15,000 applications in the SR2a phase, which ended on October 30, and since then we've going on to top 20,000. We're very pleased with the success rate we've achieved. We're at over 90%, as compared to around 50% for previous launches like .INFO or .EU."
Fighting for iPhone
This means that so far, more than 9 out of 10 people who have requested a .ASIA domain got the name they were after. Only 622 domains were requested by more than one party in SR2a and those will now go into an auction process.
"We'll start sending out notifications for auctions this week," Chung added. "And the auctions themselves should start in the 2nd week of January. Some will be interesting to watch. For example, both Cisco and Apple own trademarks for the term iPhone…"
Sunrise extended
The remaining Sunrise phases – SR2b, SR2c and SR3 – were initially all scheduled to end on January 15, 2008. "We had a lot of requests for slightly more time," says Chung, who told us that the cut-off date has now been pushed back to January 31.
Landrush will follow, from February 20 to March 12, will Go Live starting on March 26, 2008.
Pioneer unchallenged
DotAsia's Pioneer program, which ended on September 10, was followed by a challenge period. The challenge deadline was December 10 and Chung revealed that no challenges had been received, while some Pioneer names are already being use to promote .ASIA. For example, Cosmopolitan magazine will display the cosmopolitan.asia domain on the cover of its Asian issues.
Furthermore, DotAsia will extend the Pioneer program to cover two new categories: celebrity and social. Cutoff date for these new categories is February 13, 2008.
