Numeric domains coming to .PRO

RegistryPro plans to open .PRO to three character numeric domains such as 123.PRO.

The professionals' domain .PRO is currently available as third-level domains like .MED.PRO and also directly at the second-level. Numeric names cannot be registered.

RegistryPro, the registry in charge of .PRO, has just submitted a request for the release of three character numeric names. "The registry has received email and phone inquiries from the public asking about the availability of domains such as 312.pro (a local Chicago area code), and 777.pro (requested by a member of the gaming community)," RegistryPro explains in its application to ICANN.

Two classes of names

RegistryPro would like to be allowed to offer numeric names as both "resolving" and "forwarding" names.

As .PRO aims to provide a secure environment for bona-fide professionals only (currently, only qualified professionals from the United States, Canada, Germany or the United Kingdom are eligible to register .PRO domains), it uses a rather unique organizational domain name structure.

Second-level names come in two classes.

For registrants who cover multiple professional services (e.g. legal and medical services), and who have already qualified for and registered their third-level domains (e.g. me.law.pro and me.med.pro) can request the equivalent second-level domain (like me.pro). These names are called "resolving" domains by RegistryPro.

Professionals who don't cover several types of services can still request their second-level name (providing they already own a third-level .PRO domain). In this case however, the second-level name must be redirected to the registrant's third-level domain (e.g. me.pro must point to me.med.pro). These names are called "forwarding" or "Redirecting" domains.

RegistryPro's request to ICANN is for both resolving and forwarding three-character numeric domains.
