.RS opens on March 10

Next Monday, .RS will officially replace .YU as Serbia’s active Internet domain.

Serbia’s .RS will be open to anyone: companies and individuals, Serbian residents and foreigners. The only eligibility requirement is that the domain’s administrative contact must be a citizen of Serbia if it’s an individual or a legal person registered in Serbia.

.RS registration process

Serbian registry RNIDS has also made it a requirement that only local companies can become accredited registrars. Applicants will be required to send their documents proving that they have a local contact to their registrar no later than 30 days from the submission of the application for registration.

5 sub-domains will also be opened:
  • .CO.RS, for businesses;
  • .ORG.RS, for organizations;
  • .EDU.RS, aimed at educational organisations;
  • .IN.RS, for Serbian individuals;
  • .AC.RS (not managed by RNIDS directly), for Serbia’s academic and research facilities;
  • .GOV.RS (not managed by RNIDS directly), for Serbia’s state institutions.
Going from .YU to .RS

As part of the .RS launch, RNIDS will also manage the transfer of existing .YU domains to the new suffix. All .YU names registered until Friday February 29, 2008 will continue to function normally at least until September 30, 2009. After that, the names will have to be “moved” to .RS counterparts but the registry has yet to give details on the process it intends to use to achieve this.

20,000 reserved ex-.YU names

The registry has reserved a certain number of .RS domains, which cannot be requested when the suffix opens. Among these names are the 20,000-odd ex-.YU names which will be protected while the transition to .RS is finalised. There are also about a hundred names linked to local governmental institutions and about 30 names which are commonly used Internet terms.
