.ASIA adding 5,000 domains a day

.ASIA opened to all on March 26. We have the first official post-launch stats for Asia's new Internet domain.

.ASIA went live on March 26, meaning that after its ramp-up sunrise and landrush periods, Asia's domain became generally available to eligible registrants on a first-come, first-served basis.

We contacted the registry, DotAsia, to find out how the first few days of "go-live" were going. "We had an average of over 10,000 new domains everyday for the first five days," DotAsia CEO Edmun Chung explained. "Now we're seeing a steady flow of 3,000 to 5,000 new domains registered each day."

Now that it's generally available, .ASIA is naturally finding favour with its intended audience: Asia's Internet users. The highest number of registrations come from China, followed by Australia, New Zealand, India and Korea. The US and Japan are also among the top 10 countries registering .ASIA domains.

Seeing .ASIA fulfil its intended role as the region's Internet naming flagpole is obviously a very welcome development for the folks at DotAsia. "We are very encouraged to see the strong demand coming from registrants in Asia, especially from China and India," says Chung. "This presents great opportunity for our registrars to expand their market in Asia. This will ultimately mean more investment in that market and better realisation of the vast potential for the cyber real estate industry in Asia."

All sunrise requests now validated

DotAsia also told us that all the requests granted during the sunrise phases have now been validated. The final success rate for all these applications stands over 95%.

Auctions will now have to be held for the 45,000+ names applied for more than once during the landrush phase. DotAsia will announce the schedule for these auctions shortly.
