Domain names are proving as popular as ever in Germany, with the 12th million .DE domain being registered on April 14.
Germany has added about a million new domains to its namespace this past year. A new landmark of 12 million names means .DE remains the world's second favourite domain after .COM and the leading country code TLD.
We talked to German registry Denic's public relations manager Mathias Maier about .DE's new record. "80% of new domains are registered by individuals," he told us. "In addition, .DE has about 400,000 IDNs, that is domain name containing special characters like umlauts or accents."
