Following a common trend, Columbia plans to open its Top Level Domain for registrations. The local government has just released a tentative launch schedule.
A new manager and a full relaunch, that's what the next few years have in store for .CO. Currently managed by the Los Andes University, Columbia's namespace should get a new registry next year.
Columbia's telecommunications ministry has confirmed the change and release a tentative agenda for the launch of the .CO TLD.
May to August 2008: Drafting of .CO launch procedure rules.
August to November 2008 : Contracts are finalized and signed.
April to July 2009: Transfer and redelegation procedures begin.
February to May 2010: .CO opened.
• Third level Currently, Columbian domain names are only available at the third level, through suffixes like .COM.CO, .NET.CO, .NOM.CO, .EDU.CO, .ORG.CO, .GOV.CO and .MIL.CO. The most widely used is .COM.CO, which is for local companies and legal entities. All .CO registrations require a local contact, either an individual living in Columbia or a locally registered company.
