Spain now has 925,000 domains and should reach the physchologically important million this summer.
The Spanish registry claims 78,8% growth for .ES over the last year and a half. Like many other previously closed ccTLDs, the .ES registration rules were progressively softened in 2006 and 2007, partly as a response to the launch of .EU and partly to stay afloat in an ever more competitive ccTLD market.
IDNs were also launched for .ES last year, helping the Spanish namespace grow.
Since the start of the year, the Spanish registry has also been involved in a promotional campaign aimed at Spanish individuals under 30s and local SMEs. It hopes to register more than 50,000 extra domains by June this year.
