The suffix for professionals has ICANN's green light to make itself more accessible to a higher number of professionals.
Since its launch, .PRO's had difficulty taking off. Complex and restrictive registration rules are the most obvious cause of its problems. As stated in the minutes of ICANN's April 30th Board meeting "The TLD has had limited success to date, with registrations in the low thousands."
This prompted RegistryPRO to request several changes to its registration agreement with ICANN, including upping the number of eligible professions, simplifying the validation procedures, opening the extension up to professionals from countries other than the very few currently eligible nations, and increasing registration possibilities at .PRO's second level.
The ICANN Board recognised the need for .PRO to "relaunch" itself. "The .PRO has struggled as a registry and is seeking to reinvigorate the registry and that staff supports the efforts to make it successful while maintaining appropriate restrictions," ICANN staff member Kurt Pritz was noted as saying.
Although no date has been announced for the new rules to take effect, RegistryPRO will no doubt be keen to make this happen as quickly as possible. Stay tuned.
