European representation grows in ICANN's Registrars Constituency
Two European registrars, including INDOM, have just been elected to serve on the four-person Executive Committee of ICANN's Registrars Constituency.
The four members of the previous Registrars Constituency's (RC) ExCom were all American registrar representatives. The new ExCom's 50/50 split between Europe and the USA is a first for the RC and a strong sign of the community of ICANN accredited registrars' increasingly international focus.
The following were elected to serve on the new team: Jon Nevett was re-elected as president and is the only remaining member of the previous ExCom (both the previous vice-president and treasurer chose not to run again). Fellow American Mason Cole was elected to the secretary position, while Europeans Jean-Christophe Vignes and INDOM General Manager Stéphane Van Gelder were elected as vice-president and treasurer.
The Registrars Constituency is ICANN's official registrar representative body. It is one of ICANN's crucial supporting organisations, the GNSO (Generic Names Supporting Organisation), and as such plays in integral role in the decision making processes at ICANN that affect registrars and registrants alike.
Membership of the RC is not compulsory for ICANN-accredited registrars, although only they can join it. The RC currently has just over 70 paying members whom together represent more than 80% of the domains registered in generic extensions (those placed under ICANN's direct management) worldwide.
