The Welsh government has pledged £20,000 to support the campaign for the creation of a .CYM domain to promote both the Welsh region and culture.
Deputy First Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones declares the Welsh Government's support for dotCYM bid.
According to Welsh Deputy First Minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, Welsh companies should have the right to use .CYM as well as .COM. "Our pledge reflects a more strategic approach to put Wales on the world map and enhance our culture and identity on the worldwide web."
Supporters of the idea say it is an ideal way of promoting Welsh culture.
"There is an opportunity here for companies that want to use both .CO.UK and .CYM", agrees Russell Lawson, spokesman for the Federation of Small Businesses. "It may help Welsh speakers who will be able to go straight to the Welsh language version of a website."
Others aren’t so enthusiastic.
"It’s a great idea and fantastic for Welsh identity, but for our business it could cause problems", explained Justin Beddows of Admiral Group, the only Welsh firm listed in the FTSE 100. "An awful lot of our business is done over the internet, and .CYM is quite close to .COM, so there could be some confusion there. Although we’re a very proud Welsh company, most of our business isn’t done in Wales, it’s done in London, the south-east and Scotland, so I think it could be confusing."
