Neustar, the .BIZ registry, has asked ICANN for permission to release single and 2-letter names which are currently reserved and cannot be registered. Country-code 2-letter names would not be released.
Neustar's proposal is similar to proposals already put forward by other gTLD registries like .COOP, .JOBS or .MOBI.
It is based on a 3-tier release program:
1. Neustar would first like to put out an RFP for anyone interested in operating these short and valuable .BIZ names to come forward and submit proposals on how they would commit to doing so in a way that is mutually beneficial to both them and Neustar.
2. Any names not allocated as part of the RFP process would then by auctioned. The auction would be online and Neustar would either run it directly or call upon a third-party auction provider.
3. Any names left over from these two initial phases would then be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
Neustar's proposal cannot go-ahead until it is approved by ICANN, which could take a few weeks.
