Russia is set to become the first country to be awarded a non-Latin domain as part of ICANN's IDN fast-track process with .PФ (.RF), for Russian federation in Cyrillic characters.
.PФ should be available from July 2009 as the Russian registry is looking to submit its application for .PФ to ICANN by next February.
Dmitry Ufaev, managing partner at RBC Hosting Center, expects the new IDN suffix to capture around 20% of total .RU registration volumes.
Bulgaria to follow suit
Bulgaria is also said to be ready to request a localized version of its national suffix with .БГ, for .BG (Bulgaria).
At its recent international meeting in Cairo, ICANN revealed that it had contacted 252 national governments to ask them whether they would like to request an IDN TLD. 58 had responded and 32 of those responses were statements of interest in obtaining an IDN country code domain as part of the IDN fast-track.
