Internet watchdog ICANN holds three meetings a year. Decisions taken there can affect Internet users the world over. In 2008, one of the proposed meeting venues is Paris. A first for the French Capital.

The choice of venue for an ICANN meeting provides each host with a great opportunity to showcase the local Internet community. It's also a useful way to increase understanding of key Internet issues within the host country.
Since the first ICANN meeting was held in Singapore in March 1999, the cost of organising one has skyrocketed as more and more people attend. The latest meeting, held last week in Puerto Rico, was attended by over 1,000 people, an unprecedented number which nudges organisational costs towards one million dollar mark.
So meeting venues have to be chosen carefully. ICANN has split the world into five main geographical regions, each of which gets to host a meeting on a rotational basis. For 2008, Europe has a slot scheduled for the second meeting of the year, from June 22nd to 27th.
ICANN therefore put in a request for proposals to host the 2008 meetings with a June 15, 2007 deadline. Domaines.Info has learned that the European slot only saw one applicant: the city of Paris.
This doesn't mean that Paris will host its first-ever ICANN meeting for sure, as the application now has to be checked and confirmed… and probably budgeted.
